Baby shower gift

Just a quick picture of the gift I made for my cousin's baby shower at the end of Nov. It's a crochet cover with matching hat. Turned out great!

I figured it out!

I was trying to find a way to make a tool to loc my hair and I figured it out! Just cut down a plastic tapestry needle and when my hair gets longer then I can use a regular size needle.

My craftiness has gone to my head...literally!

Last year I began my transition from relaxed hair to natural hair. I began using protective styles while letting my natural hair grow and retaining the length I had. By this past July I had finally cut of all of the relaxed ends of my hair. I made the decision to loc my hair, but I wanted to wait for a year to get it done. Meanwhile I was researching the different ways to loc hair, maintenance and anything else I needed to know. I had initially wanted to get Sisterlocks, but through my research I saw that the price and installation was more than I was willing to spend. I have been doing my own hair and friends and friends of friends for years and didn't see the benefit of finding someone who was trained to do them. So I decided to do mine with two strand twists and let them cultivate from there. So far my hair is the size that I want ( a little bigger than Sisterlocks but the same basic style) and now I have been looking for the perfect tool to tighten my locks. I saw that you can use a latch hook but it's too big for my locks. I found the site that created the Nappyloc tool and it would be perfect for me. Now because I am crafty and like to make my own things, I want to figure out how to make mine myself but I think I will buy two of the tools if I run into too much of a hassle to make them, especially since they come in different sizes and I need the first two sizes that they make.

Party anyone?

I think it's time for me to have a jewelry party. I have so many pieces of jewelry that I know I will never get to wear. Might as well find someone who will get some use out of them. Who wants to get together and have fun shopping for inexpensive pieces that no one else will have?!

Hot and crafting

OMG!!! Today is sooo hot, but I am going to get back to work in a few. I needed to take a break from painting dominoes and bottle tops. I am looking for some great papers to include for the top of the dominoes and insides of the bottle caps. Maybe I'll crop some pics or draw a couple of small pics to add to them. Maybe by the time school starts for the two older kids next week I will have my crafting area complete and organized!?!? I need to charge the camera and take some photos of the new items I have finished and get an online store open and running.

Busy, busy,busy!

I have been away from my blog for a while now. I have been busy with the kids (2 birthdays down, one to go), teaching myself (and the kids) new crafts, looking for a job, hanging out with friends and family, and trying to play catch-up with the rest of life in general. I am hoping to make some new things and post pictures and descriptions really soon, but you know how things get. It's time to get back into a regular-ish routine and make some new choices about my crafting career.

Congrats!

My sister Kina graduated from Xavier University this morning. Great day for it too. Going to have fun celebrating at her party and I will make sure to drink one with her.

Simplicity

You would think that making a simple set of tassels would be a quick project...not so if you're me. It's a simple enough process but making four per set and making them in multiple colors gets boring about halfway through. Thankfully I am finished but boy did it take the better part of today to get them done. I guess that's what happens when you wait until the day before you need something done to do it. Lesson learned!

Random thouhgts

It's been a while since I have sewn anything. I keep looking at a picture of a bag I made last summer. It got me to thinking...I really want a new handbag that I know no one else will have. I am thinking that I am going to enlarge the pattern for this bag, shorten the handle or change it into two (one on each side), and make it out of some black leather or vinyl patterned material. Won't that be fun...

The Hardest Necklace Ever!

This was the first time I used crochet to make a complete piece of jewelry, but not the first time that I have done crochet. However, for some reason or another I chose to use a different type of embroidery floss. This was a metallic and it has a kind of rough hand feel when working with it. It took nearly 2 hours to complete (not to mention that I had to stitch around several beads). But I was not to be discouraged, and I will do it again. I want to do this in different colors and make earrings to match each necklace.

Re-vamping two cabinets

Okay, so I have these two boring white cabinets that I use to keep most of my craft and jewelry supplies. They have been this way for almost three years.  Yesterday I decided to paint them some kind of way. It took all day to just paint one because I couldn't decide on a final design. So for the first one two sides are kind of abstract boxes, the door is black with multi-colored dots. The final side is also black and multi-colored dots, but it has lopsided hearts as the main design. I used acrylic paints and this one turned out pretty good. Last night I tried to paint the second one's door, but I used a tempura paint. I let it dry over night but to my surprise the whole thing flaked. Now I have to scrape it completely off and buy more black paint because I used it all on the first...Oh well, you paint and learn!
